Doug McGhie graduated from UWA with B Sc (Agric) Hons (1972), MBA (1991), PhD (1981), winning the Water Corporation prize in the MBA. He is Managing Director of Science Matters Pty Ltd, consultants in science, technology and regional development and a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants. Doug’s research into water repellent soils developed effective soil wetting agents. He is past President and Life Member of the UWA Graduate Management Association and President of the Graduate Management Association of Australia, past member of the Advisory Board for the UWA GSM and served on the Board of the UWA Torpedoes (National League Water Polo) for ten years, the last four as President. He is a Life Member of that club. He was on the Advisory Committee for the Australian University Games in 2010. Doug has been active in community and sporting organisations. He is a Life Member of Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club serving as Captain, Deputy President, President and coach. He has won the Surf Life Saving WA Volunteer of the Year, President’s Medal and Coach of the Year awards, and a City of Stirling Community Service award. He has coached junior and senior sport for over 40 years, including state and national championship medallions. He coached at the University Football Club for three years, playing with the club for eight years. As a Councillor of Convocation for the last three years he has focussed on improving value for members of Convocation, initiating a new Engagement Committee.

Centenary of Federation Medal; Chancellor's Medal (UWA), UDS President (1954) Guild Councillor (1955), University Revue Co-Director (Dolphin Theatre 1960), Board Member Festival of Perth 1976 - 1984. Convocation Standing Commitee (non Council) from 1984; twice elected Deputy Warden then Warden for two terms prior to the University's 75th Anniversary. During this time Convocation established Post Graduate Travel Awards, Friends of the Art Gallery, The UWA Theatre History collection, and the Inaugural Annual 50th Graduation Year Reunion. Its volunteers created and expanded Postal List appealing for funds to relocate the Old Irwin Street Building, intended as the Convocation Office. I was co-opted to several committees, including major events and publications, concerned with UWA's Centenary and currently researching staff, students and Convocation members during the Great War, gathering material for the Chronicle of Convocation, documenting our history. The University's world has changed and I remain commited to projects ensuring graduates are regularly informed on matters of interest. Communication with the core of 1200 of us who contribute specifically to Convocation is important. This group represents a cross-section of parent, grandparents and relatives of many graduates and future students. With friends and offspring in the local community and globally scattered, we can serve as antennae for the University. I am a memeber of Friends Groups for the Gallery, Music, Historical Society and GRADS.

Peter Robinson is an accounting academic of some 44 years. Peter has spent most of his academic career with UWA (1990 to 2011 and 2014 to 2015). He has taught the breadth of the accounting curriculum with financial and strategic management accounting and public sector performance management being key areas of expertise. Peter received a UWA Teaching Excellence Award and a citation for teaching excellence from the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand. During the early to mid-1980s, Peter was an ordinary member of Convocation before serving as Deputy Warden and Acting Warden in 1984. Among Convocation’s major achievements, to which Peter contributed, was raising funds for relocating and rebuilding the Irwin Street Building on the James Oval and the development of a convocation member data base that, several years later, helped UWA to establish its Alumni association. UWA currently confronts significant threats to its financial sustainability and reputation. As the purpose of Convocation is to represent the collective interests of UWA graduates and the wider community, I wish to renew my commitment to this purpose by standing for the position of Convocation Council Member. Through its elected representation on Senate, Convocation contributes to the “independent” oversight of important recommendations proposed by senior UWA executives. If elected as a Convocation Council Member, I will draw upon my extensive academic and professional expertise in public sector financial and performance management to support the contribution Convocation makes to the effective governance of UWA.

Mark is a sustainability and finance specialist with three degrees from UWA. He is also a former UWA Honorary Research Fellow. Mark completed his Bachelor of Engineering in 2001, his Bachelor of Commerce in 2001 and his PhD on the topic of sustainability under conditions of wealth inequity in Western Australia in 2013 at the Centre for Water Research. Mark has published articles in engineering and sustainability. Mark’s experience in sustainability and finance spans 15 years and includes eight years in the US where he worked with start-up companies delivering world-class fund management services. Mark is familiar with the way boards and committees function, having served on a number in both Australia and the US. Mark’s experiences at UWA and internationally highlighted the value of high quality education and research and he hopes to bring his experience and skills to the Convocation Council in order to improve the University.

Ashok Desai is an Associate Director of CPS Capital Group, a stockbrokers and corporate advisory firm. He has worked with leading international firms in both the securities and accounting industries for over 25 years and advises a number of corporate and retail clients on wealth management advice. Ashok is past Chairman for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Western Australia and was a Council member from 2002 to 2008. He is also a member of the Institute’s Financial Planning Special Interest Group. Ashok currently serves on the Council for Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association, and has been a member of the Convocation Council since 2002. He is a past President of the Graduate Management Association, the alumni body of the University of Western Australia’s MBA program. I received a Bachelor of Engineering, with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering, from UWA in 1990 and a PhD in Materials Engineering from UWA in 1998, jointly supervised by Professor Robert Street and Professor Paul McCormick. As an undergraduate I participated in the Gledden Study Tour for Engineering students to the Soviet Union (1989); during my post-graduate studies I was the recipient of an Australian Post-Graduate Research Award and an Australian Federation of University Women Bursary. Since graduating, I have nearly twenty years of experience with major corporations in the Australian resources sector, in both technical and commercial roles, most recently as an energy market analyst with Woodside. This has included postings in the Pilbara and far north Queensland, which allowed me to become involved with local community organisations such as the Weipa Arts Council and take part in volunteer field research activities with the Australian Institute of Marine Science. My current involvement with the University is as a member of the Human Research Ethics Committee (since 2013), having previously served two terms in a similar role at the University of Notre Dame. I am also a member of the Board for my local government primary school and continue to be an active member (since 1986) of the University Hockey Club.

Peter Forrestal was actively involved in campus life during the 1960s especially with the Soccer Club, Dramatic Society and Sports Council. Since then, he has had two very different careers. Firstly, twenty years in education including fifteen years as an English teacher and head of department and five as an educational consultant. He is the author or co-author of 17 educational books, which have been published in Australia and overseas. His reference book, Look it Up! is still in print, 28 years after publication. He was foundation chairman of the Geraldton Community Education Centre and is a life member of that body and the English Teachers Association of WA. Secondly, he has worked from home since 1987 as a freelance wine writer for local, national and international publications. He was founding editor of the Sydney-based Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine and author, co-author or editor of 16 books on wine. He has been chairman of judges for GT Wine's Winemaker of the Year Awards (since 1998), Australia's Wine List of the Year (since 2008) and China's Wine List of the Year since its inception in 2012. In 2009, he was WCA's Wine Communicator of the Year. Recently he has pulled back from much of the hurly-burly to work on a history of the early days of Margaret River's wine industry and investigate his family's history. Peter has been married for 34 years to children's author, Elaine Forrestal, and they have travelled extensively, developing particular affection for Northern Ireland and France.

Agi Gedeon is an alumnus of UWA (BScHons 1984) and later University of Adelaide (PhD 1996). As a Human Molecular Geneticist her research and diagnostics career of 16 years generated over 60+ papers and still holds an H-factor of 32. She was nominated for the Australian Academy of Science Gottschalk medal and Tall Poppy (SA) award in 2000 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to research in medical sciences. She has worked for a molecular biology supplier and startup biotech companies before moving to the Pilbara where she worked with the Pilbara Division of General Practice, TAFE, RioTinto, Shire of Roebourne, Woodside and Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Agi returned to UWA in 2010 in the role of Research Development Adviser in International Networks and Collaborations where she worked with researchers across the university to build new multinational projects. She was appointed as the Centre Manager for the State Centre of Excellence in Ecohydrology, then Manager of the WA node of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and now works with the Australian National Data Service to make better use of Australia’s research data. She was on the UWA committee for the University Managers Group and freely volunteers during her leisure time for many NFP and community organisations. She is particularly keen to build alumni engagement and community development through the broad-ranging expertise of the members of Convocation.

Jeff Gunningham has a wealth of leadership experience in vocational education and training and higher education both in Australia and internationally. He retired as the Chief Executive of TAFE South Australia in mid-2014 where he was responsible for TAFE activities across the State. Until late 2010, Jeff was the Principal and Chief Executive of Swansea College, one of the largest further and higher education colleges in Wales, UK. Prior to this he was the inaugural Managing Director of Education and Training International, responsible for international student recruitment and offshore project work for all government schools and TAFE colleges in Western Australia. He has been the CEO of three other colleges in Australia as well as one in the United Arab Emirates. His expertise is broad based and covers areas such as training partnerships, strategic management, leadership development, managing change, and international business development. Before moving to Adelaide, Jeff was a Ministerial appointment to the Training Accreditation Council in Western Australia and a Board member for the Australian Vocational Training and Employment Group. He has extensive experience in developing innovative learning systems, often in partnership with industry, and particularly the resources sector. Many of these successes have been presented at conferences across the world. Jeff Gunningham has an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Management, and a Master of Business Administration. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and a Senior Honorary Fellow of the LH Martin Institute, University of Melbourne.

Worked in the resources industry experience of 39 years with BHP, Shell and Woodside with experience with development projects, operations, business development and business strategy both in Australia and internationally. Currently Woodside’s VP Innovation Capability with responsibility for the sustainability of Woodside’s capability including responsibility for close collaboration with UWA (and other universities in Australian and overseas). A member of Engineers Australia, Society of Petroleum Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers and Graduate Member Australian Institute of Company Directors. Involvement with UWA is almost continuous since arriving as an undergraduate: as a student, professional partnering and participation in the cultural environment. I am seeking a second term on Council with the aims of increasing graduate engagement with Convocation and enhancing Convocation’s influence and standing as a contributor to UWA’s future. I have extensive knowledge and experience of the Australian higher education system and of university governance. I have served on Convocation Council since March 2013, and on its Membership Committee (Convenor), Statutes Committee and Strategic Plan Working Group. I hold a PhD (Syracuse University, USA), an MEd, BEd and BA (UWA), and a Teachers Certificate (WA Secondary Teachers College). I received a Syracuse University Fellowship, an Australian-American Educational Foundation (Fulbright) Travel Grant and UWA’s Bertha Houghton Prize in Education (joint winner), and was Dux of the WA Secondary Teachers College. I am a Fellow of AIM and a member of the AICD. I currently serve on two not-for-profit Boards, recently served on the City of Joondalup’s Strategic Community Reference Group and have undertaken public policy and governance consultancy roles and pro bono activities.  Previously, I had corporate executive experience as Executive Director (Governance & Planning) at ECU and Executive Director (Strategic Resource Management) with the WA department responsible for Training.  I held policy roles in the Commonwealth Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Commonwealth Schools Commission, and policy and resource management roles in the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training.  Earlier, I was an academic in UWA’s Department of Education and a high school teacher at Collie, WA.

Julie Matheson graduated from UWA in 2012 with a degree in Political Science and International Relations, and History. She is a registered certified financial planner with a career in financial services for the past 28 years. Currently Julie is a consultant to Aboriginal trustees located in the Pilbara. She is also a board member of the Financial Planning Association of Australia and was elected by her peers nationally in 2006. In 2011, Julie was elected as a Councillor with the City of Subiaco, and re-elected again in 2015 for another four year term. UWA is located in the City of Subiaco and the City of Nedlands. Both councils collaborate with UWA on projects of mutual interest such as the No. 97 bus services from UWA to the Subiaco train station, recycling of waste water for parks and a partnership with the UWA School of Architecture promoting practical experience in design. As a recent UWA graduate with board member experience and an elected Subiaco Councillor, Julie is well placed to contribute to the roles of Convocation – representative, governance, contribution, engagement and promotion.

Dr Roger Nicholas May, married to Christine Anne May, and now a proud step grandfather of Georgia. Education at St George’s College, Weybridge, Surrey, England. After leaving St George’s College, I received a short service commission in the British army and was an officer aged 18, leaving the army after four years. I joined the Road Transport Industry Board in 1970. I was responsible for negotiating with Senior Executives in Industry and implementing the Board’s policies to enable small business to be more competitive within the London and Essex area. While working there full time I completed an Open University BA in government and management studies. I migrated to Perth in 1987, became an Australian citizen in 1990, and completed the following qualifications. Graduate Diploma in Education Studies, (Murdoch), a Graduate Diploma in Business (Curtin), a Masters in Industrial Relations (UWA), PhD in Business (Curtin). In recent times I have worked as a Masters swimming coach, and volunteered with the State Emergency Service. I have enjoyed belonging to softball, cricket, rowing, archery, and soccer teams. In 2008 I completed the City to Surf 12 kilometre run. Universities of the 21st century are a major structure in any society allowing the brightest and best to achieve their potential. My contribution would come from my wide experience in industrial training, and from studying in a broad range of academic subjects in Western Australia. I am now retired and therefore have time to contribute. I have an open mind to innovation and enterprise.

Michael Minosora graduated from Curtin University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Business Degree and from the University of Western Australia in 1992 with an MBA. Michael’s career includes leadership roles in the professional services sector, investment banking, and the natural resources sector, both in Australia and internationally. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Michael has a strong interest in community service and in particular working with disabled children. As a candidate for Convocation Council, Michael aims is to strengthen the University’s ties with the business and the wider community for the benefit of all.

Nee Nee Ong is a graduate of UWA with Masters in Business Administration (2000) and Bachelor of Engineering (1996). With 20 years’ experience she currently works as a Principal Electrical Engineer at GHD Pty Ltd managing interdisciplinary teams for the delivery of projects and providing electrical design work. Nee Nee has continued her association with UWA, as seen more recently in 2015 as a university accreditation accessor and with UWA volunteer positions, such as mentoring. Nee Nee has extensive leadership, governance, marketing, event organisation and finance experience with not-for-profit and professional organisations. This is evident with the current positions held with Engineers Australia; member of Congress, member of Electrical College Board and Chair of Women in Engineering. Ian Passmore has been closely engaged with the life and work of our University since he was an undergraduate and since then he has served the University directly and indirectly in wide variety of ways and through a myriad of roles. He is currently a member of the Council of Convocation, and during the Centenary celebrations served as its representative on the Senate Centenary Planning Committee. Experience: Broad professional and senior leadership experience within the university, hospital, government (federal, state, local), charitable, medical research, sporting and community development sectors. Has significantly contributed to the formation and significant growth of several new organisations, two research institutes, a research centre of excellence, a new school in the university, several buildings, and a range of community support services particularly in health and education associated with the University, the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre, government and the community sector; currently is a member of five Boards or councils in the education, health or community services sectors covering a diversity of areas from drug and alcohol rehabilitation, education, financial counselling to emergency relief; BSc DipEd BCom MBA (WAust): professional memberships in CPA Australia, management, science. An engineer by profession and an environmentalist at heart, I believe passionately in Western Australia's potential for renewable energy. Having studied, volunteered and worked within the sector for nearly a decade, I have been actively involved with the community groundswell underpinning the sustainability movement. As the chair of an advisory body to politicians and many disparate groups, I understand the importance of distilling and disseminating complex information into valuable and actionable material. I believe that creating a sustainable future represents the greatest opportunity Australia will experience within our lifetime. I believe that the transition to a low carbon economy will benefit Australian business, reduce the destruction of our environment and leave a legacy our children's children wild be proud to inherit. John has an extensive professional international experience working the the United Kingdom and Australia across many industries including automotive, mineral processing, aerospace and research & development.   He has been employed in senior roles or worked as a senior consultant within a range of leading international corporations, including BHP Billiton Rolls-Royce and Ford Motor Company. John has also taught at both UWA and Cambridge University.  John's professional life is demonstrative of his belief in collaborative working relationships between Industry and Universities. Robert has had a diverse professional career in Australia, Japan and England with companies engaged in global commerce including iconic West Australian companies such as Argyle Diamonds and Gold Corporation. Robert completed a Master of Business Administration (International) at the University of Western Australia in 2006.  In addition to his Masters Degree from UWA Robert holds commerce and arts degrees from Curtin University of Technology. In 2016 Robert represented the University of Western Australia at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, being awarded top performing student of the Summer School Programme .In community service Robert has promoted a deeper understanding and understanding between Australia and Japan as an active committee member of the Australia Japan Society between 2009 and 2014. Contribution within this society included liaison with other community groups, government and consular officials to promote greater interaction with the Japanese community in Perth. Robert has represented Western Australia in cultural exchanges most notably the sister state relationships with the Hyogo Prefecture in Japan’s Kansai region. Robert is currently acting as an independent consultant for Australian and US companies consulting in commercial and marketing initiatives including export market penetration, negotiation and cross-cultural advice. Personal interests include sustainable practices in urban living and improving the recognition and integration of indigenous Australian culture. Robert is a proud father of two boys currently completing preparatory and senior school at Guildford Grammar School.

I graduated from UWA with a B.A in 1961, and enduring loyalty to my alma mater. Apart from study I was Secretary of the Guild Council, member of a student delegation to Indonesia, and basically graduated from the Pelican to journalism (The West Australian, Scottish Daily Mail, ABC broadcasting in radio and television). During that time I was on the Convocation Council in the mid 80’s, and wrote articles for the Crawley magazines and for the UWA history Campus in the Community for the 75th anniversary. During later careers in the arts and retailing I was on the committee of Friends of LWAG, and still a member of the Friends. More recently I was on the founding committee of the Collectors’ Club which puts thousands of dollars into the visual arts in WA each year. Since retiring in 2013 I have been an enthusiastic member of U3A and its courses, and general supporter of the arts community. I now have more time for community work, and would like to put some of it on the Convocation Council at a time when UWA needs all the graduate support possible. I retain extensive networking in the arts community, and see Convocation as an opportunity to encourage graduates to make use of the stimulating events on the campus.
