The 2022 UWA Convocation Spring Ordinary Meeting will be held online, in person, and livestreamed on Thursday 15 September 2022 at 6.30pm (AWST)
All UWA graduates and other members of Convocation are invited to attend the Spring Ordinary Meeting in the UWA Business School on Thursday 15 September 2022 at 6.00 pm for a 6.30 pm start.
The guest speaker for the evening, Ms Kate Chaney MP, Independent Federal Member for Curtin in Western Australia will give a talk on
“Preparing UWA students for the future”
Kate Chaney is WA’s first female Independent Federal Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives. She was educated and raised in Curtin and has deep family connections with the electorate, attending school at John XXIII and later the University of Western Australia, where she gained a law degree.
Coming from a family with strong political history, Kate grew up in a culture where service to community was highly valued through business, law, politics and education.
I look forward to welcoming you to our Spring Ordinary General Meeting on 15 September.
The Covid pandemic has proved challenging, but its upside is our rapid adoption of online technology. What a fantastic opportunity it has provided. It makes it possible for thousands of our members from all parts of the world to connect at our two general meetings each year.
Your Council has been working on a new Strategic Plan to ‘Reimagine Convocation Council.’ All will be revealed later in the year, but one change we’re planning is to drop the term ‘ordinary.’ It was used in the UWA Statute to differentiate an ‘Ordinary’ General Meeting from a ‘Special’ one and is quite redundant. We hope that there will be nothing ordinary about our General meetings.
Two aspects of our general meetings are particularly significant.
First, you have the opportunity to ask questions about your university. This year, as the Vice Chancellor will be overseas, Professor Tim Colmer, the Acting Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor, will report on the past year at UWA and answer your questions. So please send in questions as detailed above.
Second, you have the opportunity to hear from a thought-provoking speaker. I am delighted that Kate Chaney, the new Independent member for Curtin will join us. Her winning election platform was built around four priority areas — real climate action, integrity in politics, economic opportunities, and inclusive communities. Who better than Kate to consider ‘What UWA should be doing to prepare students for the future.’
Emeritus Professor Jenny Gregory AMThe Q&A Session has been replaced with Questions on Notice to the panel. Questions should be brief, address one topic only and must be received in writing no later than 2 September. Please register your question by clicking here or email your question to [email protected]
