My internship and residency were at Royal Perth Hospital and his training in General Surgery was undertaken at Sir Charles Gairdiner Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital and Fremantle Hospital. I was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1990 by examination in General Surgery. I was employed as a lecturer at the University of London and Senior Registrar at the Royal Free Hospital in London in 1990/91 and later in 1991 started as a Consultant General Surgeon at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and part-time in private practice. I was Head of the Department of Surgery at SCGH form 2001 – 2003. Since 2012 I have been full time in private practice as a Breast Surgeon, Endocrine Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist with a special interest in Malignant Melanoma. In October 2013, he merged his practice with a mate (also a UWA graduate), to form Integrative Business Solutions. Dr. Alfred Tan was a PhD graduate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Western Australia in 2000. His doctorate thesis was on the subject of wireless communication engineering. Since then, Alfred Tan has been an Associate Professor, an entrepreneur, an IP attorney, an engineer, a research scientist, an inventor and a university administrator all rolled in one. Currently, he is the Head of the Knowledge Transfer Office at Hong Kong Baptist University. Alfred is also a Court member of the Hong Kong Baptist University. He started his career in academia before embarking to successfully lead his own technology startup. Alfred Tan has a number of patents to his name. He then returned to academia to further his career as a well published Professor in engineering and technology, both in Hong Kong and Australia. Alfred Tan is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of Engineers Australia. He is also a registered Australian Trade Marks attorney and an often-referenced patent consultant. Alfred Tan is also represent the Hong Kong Baptist University as a strategic member in the Hong Kong Business Angel Network, advising the University startups on intellectual property rights protection, financial analysis and business modeling. I have a long association with UWA commencing with a Bachelor of Economics and roles in student activities including as President of the Economics and Commerce Students Society. I started my career in education and helped establish an innovative senior high school in Canberra. I moved into arts administration, and was CEO of two arts centres, the Canberra Theatre Centre and Perth Theatre Trust. I was elected President of Australian Performing Arts Centres Association (APACA) and appointed inaugural Chair of Playing Australia, a national touring program. In 2009 I was awarded inaugural life membership of APACA. After director and advisory roles in State Government across several policy areas, I was appointed to my current position as GM of Oil Mallee Australia, a farmer group that promotes integrated farm forestry for environmental benefits, carbon offsets and bioenergy. Other current roles include Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute, Chair of TEDxPerth (two events on UWA campus), Director of CEO Institute (WA), Councillor of Friends of the Festival, Bungendore Park Management Committee, and Tura New Music Board. My keen interest and involvement with Convocation includes three years as Warden after active roles on committees and as Deputy Warden. As a member of Senate I have participated actively during a period of change, celebration and achievement. I was born in WA and educated at Governor Stirling Senior High School, Midland, before completing my Medical Degree at UWA in 1969. In 1975 I completed the FRACGP examination and worked as a solo General Practitioner for 35 years. I also served as a visiting Medical Officer to RAAF Base Pearce for seven years and was Area Medical Officer for the Department of Army until 1983. In 1976 the Department of Veteran Affairs appointed me as a medical member of the WA Repatriation Review Tribunal and then to the Veteran Review Board until 1983. In 1994 I co-authored two international papers on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with research scientists at UWA, Departments of Microbiology and Human Movement. I served as Patron of the WA Society for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for five years until 2011. In 2003, Convocation of UWA appointed me as their Medical Alumni representative to the Advisory Board of UWA Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. I served on this Board for ten years. In 1984 I gained the FAICD qualification and over the last ten years I have served as a Company Director on the Boards of five ASX listed companies. I have a special interest in tertiary education and in particular I will be keen to help enhance the standard of education in Health Sciences, Biotechnology and Corporate Law. I feel my experience in Medicine and on Company Boards serves me in good stead as a suitable member of Senate.

I have served a four year term on Senate and have gained valuable knowledge and experience. With my particular skill set, I wish to nominate for a further term. I am a many generations Western Australian, educated at East Claremont Primary School (Prac) and MLC. My sisters and brother are all UWA graduates, and I obtained a Master of Education. To be a physical education teacher, I completed a Diploma of Physical Education and Teachers’ Certificate. An introduction to recreation planning, event planning and management lead to me becoming the Inaugural Sports Administrator for the Independent Girls’ Schools Sports Association. My connection to UWA continued and I became a research assistant, and then joined University Extension. Establishing my own consultancy I became the Inaugural Manager of Corporate Events, Edith Cowan University. I have: inherited a commitment to serving the community and am a second generation member of the Council of St Catherine’s College and of Senate; been President and awarded Honorary Life Membership of Graduate Women (WA); served two years on the Centenary Trust for Women; been involved with UWA Fencing Club, having organised the WA International Fencing Tournaments and received an AFF Award for Outstanding Innovation; involved with the UWA Athletics Club as an athlete and now as a former athlete; awarded a Half Blue; Invited to be an entry in “Who’s Who of Australian Women” since 2008 – 2014.

Mr Quang Ly graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree from UWA and has worked in the tertiary sector for 13 years, including appointments in Kunming (China), Sydney and Perth. He was a lecturer in the Engineering Faculty from 2000 to 2001 and in 2005 was invited to join UWA as the inaugural Faculty Development Officer within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. Quang is currently the Senior Faculty Development Officer at the UWA Business School. At UWA, Quang has secured significant financial and in-kind support, creating important University-Industry partnerships with major national and international corporations including BHP Billiton, Chevron, Clough Limited, Ernst & Young, Mitsubishi Development and Monadelphous. These supportive relationships have resulted in hundreds of student scholarships and prizes, international visiting professor programs, new student learning facilities, and millions of dollars worth of research support. As a migrant, Quang is passionate about providing accessible, quality education for the next generation of global leaders. He is fluent in three languages; has lived in Asia for several years and has a strong understanding of Asian cultures. If elected to the University Senate, Quang will work with the University to extend its relationships with international and younger alumni. Shannon is Strategic Planning Manager at Woodside Energy Limited, Australia’s largest Oil and Gas company. He previously held roles of Advisor to Executive Vice President Technology and Advisor to Executive Vice President Development. Shannon has a broad background in Project Management, Drilling Operations, Engineering, Development, Technology Commercialisation, Strategic Management and Governance. He has worked for Rio Tinto, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Chevron Australia and Woodside Energy. Shannon has developed a strong understanding of the long term challenges facing the energy, minerals and academic sectors both domestically and abroad. Shannon recently led a federal government application to establish Perth as an Oil and Gas technology hub. The application drew together a wide range of industry, small to medium enterprise and university partners. UWA, through the WA Energy Research Alliance, was at the centre. Shannon is strongly committed to cross sector collaboration as a means to improve training, research and commercialisation outcomes. Shannon has a Bachelor of Commerce, a Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) from UWA and a Master of Business Administration (Distinction) from Manchester University. Russell graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1988 with an Honors degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was privileged to be the recipient of a Clough scholarship, and to join Clough post graduation where he spent 17 years as an engineer and manager, and developed an enviable reputation for successful project delivery. During his Clough days, Russell lived and worked throughout Australia and Asia. After leaving Clough, Russell joined Leighton to again work in Asia. Over an 8 year period, he developed an offshore oil and gas capability and lead the development and growth of a substantial multidiscipline construction business in India. As Managing Director of the India business, Russell’s responsibilities included management of a Construction Engineering program for University students, and Trades training school, both important ventures designed to enhance engineering and trades skill development based on Australian knowledge and experience. From India, Russell returned to Australia to join UGL, where his most recent role was as CEO of UGL’s $2.5bn Engineering business. Russell is a firm believer in the value of education. In addition to his UWA degree, he holds a Bachelors degree in law from Macquarie University and Masters Degree in Law from Deakin University. He is a recipient of the Macquarie University distinguished service Award for his achievements internationally. Outside of his career, Russell is a dedicated family man, and proud father. He has four children aged in their early twenties and late teens. Russell’s family now represents three generations of UWA graduates.

Murray Meaton is the Director of Economic Consulting Services. He established the company in 1997 following over 25 years of State and Federal government experience. Murray has qualifications in Agricultural Science and Economics both from the Univeristy of Western Australia. Murray worked in government for the Department of Agriculture, Treasury, the Commonwealth DPIE, Industries Assistance Commission and CSIRO. He finished as Director, Economic Policy with the Department of Minerals and Energy. Since establishing a consultancy company, Murray has been involved in more than 700 assignments for a wide range of clients including companies, government departments and industry associations. He is a member of the Chamber of Minerals Infrastructure and Economics Committee and the Energy Committee, Board Director for the Australian Institute of Energy, WA Chair of the Australian Institute of Energy and a Director of his Rotary Club. I am a graduate of the Faculty of Agriculture with thirty years of environmental management experience in the agricultural and mining industries from both an industry and government perspective. My extensive experience includes management of a broad range of environmental issues from a “hands on” level through to National and State strategic planning and policy development. I run my own consultancy providing strategic environmental advice and services to industry and government. Prior to this I held a senior environmental management position in the Department of Industry and Resources. I contributed to state and national policy on environmental issues in the resource development industry. I have contributed to AusAid and World Bank projects dealing with the impacts of mine closure on communities and the environment. I have represented WA interests on Commonwealth Working Groups and Committees contributing to the development of a number of national environmental management standards and guidelines. I have maintained a strong interest in education since graduating, working with TAFE on the development of curriculum relating to mine site rehabilitation and environmental management skills. I have worked with CSIRO and the universities in WA in the development of curriculum and research programs, providing input and advice on strategic education and research direction. I have lectured at both the University of WA and Murdoch University. I have just completed my second term as a convocation elected member of Senate. I am deputy chair of the External Environment Committee and the deputy chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.

Mark was born in Perth and educated in government schools and at the University of Western Australia. Mark has been teaching in secondary schools, government and private, city and country, for thirty years. He has a passion for history and was for many years the inaugural editor of the History Teachers’ Association journal, Hindsight. He is the co-author of three history textbooks on revolutions and has presented at many state and national history teachers’ conferences. Recently his focus has shifted to the impact of globalisation and internationalisation on education and howschools and universities need to respond to these developments in order to better equip students for a more challenging interconnected world. This interest, in turn,inspired his doctoral research on the internationalisation of education in Australian schooling. Mark feels his expertise in international education and his experience in strategic planning places him in an ideal position to both represent the interests of members of Convocation as well as give back to a university that has given him, and others, so much over the years. Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education with Honours and Doctor of Education from the University of Western Australia and is a sessional teacher in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia and Director of Global Programs at St Stephen’s School. I am a Senior Counsel, and specialise in contractual, corporate and insolvency disputes. I also appear in public law and constitutional cases. I obtained a Bachelor of Laws from UWA in 1994. After completing this degree, I won the Hackett Scholarship from UWA, and used this to study for a Bachelor of Civil Laws at Oxford University. I have recently been appointed to UWA’s Law School Advisory Committee. I have an ongoing interest in legal research and education, having co-authored a text on commercial contracts, written various articles and edited the Western Australian Law Reports. I also have a particular interest in promoting effective medical research, especially the causes of childhood obesity and the developmental origins of childhood disease.

Mr Chad Silver currently holds a Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Science, Graduate Certificate in G.I.S and a Juris Doctor (Graduate Entry Law Degree). Mr Silver also operates his own business. Mr Silver has an extensive professional community service record which includes currently being the branch secretary of the Australian Lawyers Alliance. He has previously held positions on the Curtin University Council, the Murdoch University Law Board and the Law Society of WA, Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee. As a result of his experiences on these boards, he is very familiar with the complexities of the Education Sector and the relevant legislation, regulations and processes that the organisation must follow. His wisdom, skills, expertise and intelligence is noted by many. More recently he has been invited to talk at the 2014 Australian Institute of Judicial Administration Conference to be held in New South Wales next year. I am an applied mathematician and research scientist with interests in computational chemistry and physics, currently employed as a Senior Environmental Officer with the Department of Environment Regulation. During nearly 30 years of research experience in academic, industrial, and government institutions, I have published a large volume of material in leading international journals, presented many papers at conferences, and developed a broad interdisciplinary scientific perspective. As a scientist, I have an interest not only in research, but also in the communication of scientific knowledge, which developed from my experience as a high school teacher, a Lecturer in Physical Chemistry at UWA (1990-1993) and an Associate Professor at the University of Natal. Scientific communication is of importance not only to the scholarly mission of the university, but also in combating the increasing public skepticism of the value of scientific approaches to problems of national significance. After attending Perth Modern School, I obtained a BSc and MSc from the University of Auckland (1978, 1980), a PhD from the University of Ottawa (1986), and a DipEd in secondary mathematics teaching from UWA (1993). I am a Chartered Chemist, Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and accredited Member of the Australian Mathematical Society. Since leaving UWA in 2011 I have acted as a consultant adviser in communications, public affairs and government relations. For 15 years my roles at UWA were Director of Public Affairs, and Principal Adviser (External Relations and Advocacy). In those roles I provided strategic advice to the Vice-Chancellor and Executive of UWA on matters likely to have a significant impact on the relationship between UWA and the wider community. An Arts graduate born in country Western Australia, my early career in the newspaper industry both in production and editorial areas enabled me to build a career in communications which has spanned both the public and private sectors. Throughout my working life I have been an active member and office bearer of a diverse range of community based organisations. Graduated from UWA in the early 80s with an Agricultural Science degree. Since then I have returned to UWA completing a Masters Preliminary in Landscape Management, and as a scholarship recipient travelled to Copenhagen to commence a Masters in Science (NRM). Whilst studying with my 2 children accompanying me, there were wonderful opportunities not only to immerse myself in the university life but to also be part of an extended school parenting body. I will have completed a thesis on coastal zone planning and community consultation - quite a different Masters to that commenced in Copenhagen. I have worked in place planning, tertiary classes and recently secondary teaching organic horticulture introducing the organic agriculture and accessing funding for a school program in a low socio economic area in Perth. I am vitally interested in education and am the current President of Graduate Women WA (2011-2014) and national vice president. We are the donators of many awards and scholarships to UWA and other universities. This has become a time of change for GWWA as we revitalize our national association and look to new directions in advocacy with women. I lead this invigoration. I also represent women on the International Women’s Day committee and we endeavor to hold a large fundraiser breakfast each year to support women in less fortunate regions. I will bring to Convocation Council a proactive and forward thinking member.

Cliff Gillam took a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in English from UWA in 1970. He was awarded a Hackett Studentship in 1971, and in 1972 a Masters with Distinction. He has a Graduate Diploma in Business from Curtin University awarded in 1993, and a Masters in Public Policy and Administration awarded by Monash University in 2005. He is currently the Executive Director Workforce with the Department of Education, and has served in senior and executive roles in the Western Australian public sector for over twenty years. He was a Lecturer in the English Department of UWA from 1975 to 1981, and, prior to his public service career, was active as an actor, writer, director and producer in theatre in Western Australia. He served as a member of UWA’s Senate Audit Committee from 2004 to 2006, and has been a member of the Convocation Council since 2010. He has published poetry in Westerly and other journals, and was a regular reviewer and critic in the national journal Theatre Australia in the 70’s and 80’s. He has chaired the Boards of the Western Australian Theatre Company and Artrage, and is a Life Member of the Perth Festival Fringe Society. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute. He would like to contribute, as a member of Convocation Council, to the achievement of UWA’s goal of being amongst the world’s top fifty universities by 2050.

In 20 years’ service, I rose to the rank of Wing Commander, with postings in flying squadrons, personnel, on exchange in the US and as Assistant Air & Naval Attaché in the Australian Embassy, Washington DC. For accomplishments in charge of air transport operations, I was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). In civilian life, I have consulted in aviation operations; organisational and performance management; and strategic management and planning in the Defence and corporate sectors. As a building refurbishments project manager, I worked with GHD and now, the WA Dept of Finance. While at the UWA Business School, taking an MBA in 2010, I was twice elected President of the Graduate Management Association. I was elected as a Convocation Councillor in 2010, serving as Chair of its University Statutes Committee, and was last year elected Deputy Warden. As a long term graduate of UWA, I appreciate the essential role of Convocation in preserving the qualifications from and connections with this University. With the changing UWA demographic and landscape, the Council has successfully redirected energy toward relevant future needs of graduates and the University, with modernised rules and initiatives such as electronic communications and voting. I am keen to continue assisting this significant, historical association as it adapts in form and function to meet expectations. Therefore, I seek your vote for election as Councillor.

James Paparo completed a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics major), Bachelor of Economics and a Diploma in Education at The University of Western Australia. In March 2012 he was also awarded a Graduate Diploma in International Relations and, in September 2012, a Master of International Relations with Distinction at UWA. James works as Trade and International Relations Manager at the Western Australian Department of Fisheries. His previous employment has included ASEAN Desk Manager for the Western Australian Department of Commerce and Trade (now Department of State Development), Corporate Development Manager for London-based airport company BAA plc (now Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited), Principal Policy Officer at the Western Australian Department of Premier and Cabinet, and Principal Private Secretary to a former Western Australian Premier. James was a Member of Convocation Council in 2012-13, and was further co-opted to Council in November 2013 following the resignation of a Council Member. James is a member of the Convocation Awards Committee and has provided communications support to this committee and for other Convocation activities. He is married with three teenage children. His four sisters and two brothers are also UWA graduates.

Mr Chad Silver currently holds a Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Science, Graduate Certificate in G.I.S and a Juris Doctor (Graduate Entry Law Degree). Mr Silver also operates his own business. Mr Silver has an extensive professional community service record which includes currently being the branch secretary of the Australian Lawyers Alliance. He has previously held positions on the Curtin University Council, the Murdoch University Law Board and the Law Society of WA, Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee. As a result of his experiences on these boards, he is very familiar with the complexities of the Education Sector and the relevant legislation, regulations and processes that the organisation must follow. His wisdom, skills, expertise and intelligence is noted by many. More recently he has been invited to talk at the 2014 Australian Institute of Judicial Administration Conference to be held in New South Wales next year. In his spare time, he is an avid cyclist, elite golfer and windsurfing and an aspiring saxophonist. As with all tasks he chooses to complete, he will apply myself diligently with the utmost levels of respect, honesty and integrity to make a valuable contribution to both the organisation and society. As he focused on quality and excellence, Chad Silver will lead the University of WA to a brighter future, and continue to maintain the significant level of achievement as set by the formerly elected members.

I graduated with a B. Arch in 1980, and am married with 2 children. Since graduation, I have worked as an Architect both in Perth and for 13 years in New York. My 2 daughters have each obtained Bachelor degrees in the US, one in a State University and the other in a Private. My eldest is now undertaking a PhD in biochemistry at UWA following her successful year of honours. The younger is seeking to enrol next year to further her studies. Whilst in New York I was a founding member of the UWA Alumni Association, New York. I have been a member of the Council of Convocation for the past 3 years. During that time, I have served on the Statutes Committee and more recently the Strategic Plan Working Party. On Statutes, the primary concern is the required amendments to the UWA Act’s statutes to allow the introduction of electronic voting and establishing a flexible framework to facilitate the continuing integration and development of electronic communication. My principal interests in Convocation remain to assist Convocation members and our University to further engage positively with each other, and, to actively demonstrate and promote our role as leaders to the wider community both locally and internationally.

Retired Teacher-Librarian, IT and Associations Manager. As a Convocation Councillor since 1987 I have served on all sub-committees, been Events Convenor, Deputy Warden and Convocation representative on UWAHS. My focus has been on community related activities such as the Centenary balloons photo, organising successful 50th Reunions and creating UNISON (University Societies & Organisations Network); I am also currently researching and writing the Chronicle of Convocation, a history of Convocation’s first 100 years. UWA Convocation Senator (1996-1998), serving on External Environment, Community Relations, Audit and Honorary Degrees Sub-Committees. Extensive Community service including - Vice-President, Guides WA; Vice-President National Council of Women; Soroptimists International; Australia-China Friendship delegation; Vice-President Swanbourne Primary P&C; President Bunbury Apex Pre-School; Recording audio books - Guide Dogs WA. UWA gave me a love of learning which transformed my life, and for which I am indebted. Service on both Convocation and Senate of UWA enabled me to ensure that statutory responsibilities are fulfilled, and to build and maintain strong links between graduates, UWA, and the community. In a time of accelerating change, graduates need to be actively involved in an institution which helped develop and shape WA, and Australia. I want to serve you as a Convocation Councillor and I need your support. I studied at the University of Western Australia between 2002 and 2008. I completed a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2007 and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 2008 (majoring in Political Science and Philosophy). I have been working in the legal profession since 2007. I was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australian on 3 February 2009 and of the High Court of Australia on 19 February 2009. I now have my own law firm in Perth. I joined the Australian Army Reserve in 2006. I graduated from the Royal Military College – Duntroon in February 2013. I am currently serving as an Army Reserve Lieutenant in the 13th Brigade. I am a councillor for the City of Gosnells. I am the Vice-President of the Gosnells Branch of the Returned and Services League. I am also a parishioner at the Thornlie Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. As a migrant from a non-English speaking background, studying law, political science and philosophy wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. However, the University, its staff and fellow students helped me as much as they could so that I could achieve my academic goals and I can realise my dreams here in Australia.
